February 2023

Dear Juniata Community,

It is with a sense of pride and enthusiasm that I share the key tenets of “All In: The Strategic Plan for Juniata College,” which consists of three strategic commitments: Academic Distinction, Equity-Minded Culture, and The Campus Experience.

This plan, without equivocation, leans into what has made Juniata so successful for more than 146 years. It is centered on our core values and principles upon which we were founded. We remain firmly grounded in a liberal arts tradition that values intellectual curiosity, critical inquiry, and a breadth of perspective. This plan also ensures that we live up to the promise we make to our students and community while remaining nimble and adaptive to a changing environment.

Our mission, however, is unchanged: We provide an engaging, personalized educational experience empowering our students to develop the skills, knowledge, and values that lead to a fulfilling life of service and ethical leadership in the global community. Our vision to graduate citizens of consequence and to understand the world in which they will be living and contributing remains as well.

We believe this new strategic plan provides the necessary roadmap to help us address the opportunities in front of us, including a particular focus on financial sustainability, recruitment, and retention, equity and inclusion, a spirit of innovation, and renewed attention to our technological infrastructure.

To conclude, I want to thank Tracy Grajewski, Vice President for Administration, and Dr. Dom Peruso, Associate Provost, for their leadership in developing this plan with the broader strategic planning committee. It was roughly an 18-month process that was inclusive of students, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, and members of the Huntingdon community. We are grateful for the work that was done, and now is the time to step forward and deliver.

Warm regards,
President James A. Troha

This Month at Juniata

A Winning Streak

The #1 Juniata men's volleyball team's win over Marymount maintains Juniata's program-best winning streak and the best start to a season with a 12-0 record. The Eagles will play Penn State Altoona at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 17, as part of the Eagle Invitational in Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center.

Sharing Triumph Over Injustice

The 2023 Malloy Distinguished Lecturer, Sharmin (Reepi) Ahmad, will present “Triumphing Over Injustice: A Daughter’s Account of Leadership During the Violent Birth of Bangladesh” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Neff Lecture Hall, von Liebig Center for Science.

Tapping the Trees

Maple syrup season is quickly approaching, and students at the Raystown Field Station are preparing the Sugar Shed for the sweetest time of year! Juniata continues the tradition begun by the Grove family nearly 100 years ago. The maple grove supplies about 400 taps annually.

Save the Date

The third annual Day of Giving will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2023. During the 24-hour, campus-wide effort, alumni, parents and friends come together to transform the student experience.
