President's Newsletter

Dear Juniata Community,
What a week this has been! It’s the beginning of a new semester and Juniata’s year-long 150th anniversary celebration. It’s a joy and a privilege to see the Juniata mission unfold each year as we welcome the newest Juniatians to our community–the more than 400 members of the Class of 2029.
Promise and excitement are evident in every corner of campus, from the energy of move-in day, the new student picnic, and Coffee on the Quad, to the reflective moments of opening convocation and candle lighting. These are the moments that unite us through our shared love of Juniata College, whether we first arrived on campus last week or 50 years ago.
Juniata’s faculty gathered last week for a faculty conference exploring AI organized by Territa Poole, associate professor of psychology, with a keynote provided by Eddie Watson of the American Association of Colleges and Universities.
The College has been recognized in The Princeton Review’s 2026 Best 391 Colleges guide, ranking in the top 15% nationwide and earning high marks for accessible professors, classroom experience, financial aid, and campus diversity and engagement.
As September quickly approaches, I’m pleased to welcome four new board members, Jeremy Anagnos, Dr. Clay Cooper ’13, Angela (Montag) Jones ’01, and Dr. James M. Metz ’89, who begin their three-year terms at the beginning of the month. We also welcome Carl D. Glaeser ’77, who succeeds Mary M. White ’73 as board chair for the coming term.
Thank you for sharing in the excitement of a new semester, a milestone celebration, and the launch of our new nursing program. We hope to see you on campus this fall.
Warm regards,
President James A. Troha

Juniata Celebrates Sesquicentennial
“This milestone moment in Juniata’s history is an occasion to celebrate the visionary legacy that is as present today as it was in 1876. Our founders set out to establish a learning community rooted in values of academic excellence and preparation for lives of leadership and service. That same spirit endures today as we prepare our students to lead lives of purpose and meaning in a complex and changing world.”

Connections and Community
From Inbound to candle lighting, the transition into a new academic year is steeped in tradition. We welcome the newest members to our community while deepening our connections to one another and Juniata. Student life organizes a series of events to acclimate new students to campus and to build friendships and encourage connections.
Faculty Conference

Juniata is participating in AAC&U’s Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum, with Provost Lauren Bowen as team leader and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Director and Associate Professor of Psychology Territa Poole as co-leader. Team members are Shuang Quan, assistant professor of education; Robb Lauzon, co-director of the Speech and Writing Center and assistant professor of communication; and Tom McClain, assistant director of instructional technology.
Celebrating Faculty Accomplishments
Jim Borgardt, William W. Woolford Professor of Physics and Chair, attended the ITWG Nuclear Forensics Conference in Bologna, Italy, in June, where he led a workshop on capacity-building through nuclear forensics exercises. He also delivered an invited workshop on “Nuclear Diplomacy” for the Hiroshima and Peace Program in Hiroshima, Japan, in August. Students Aaditya Kommi ’26 and Daniel McCauley ’26 also participated in the weeklong course, made possible through a newly signed MOU between Hiroshima City University, Juniata College, and the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.
John Bukowski, professor of mathematics, was one of about 20 conductors to take part in the 2025 Choral Conducting Workshop at the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music in July. He was selected to participate in the Conducting Festival master class at the end of the week. He also received a 2025 Meritorious Service Award from the Mathematical Association of America for his more than twenty years of outstanding service to the MAA at the national and sectional levels.
Jennifer DellAntonio, director of nursing, authored a manuscript, “Five Step Feedback Framework,” which has been accepted for publication. The framework offers a structured, compassionate approach to faculty-student feedback designed to promote psychological safety, professional growth, and academic success-principles closely aligned with our mission at Juniata.
Zia Haque, director of the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, published “The Dark Side of Information and Communication Technologies: Analyzing Encumbrances as well as Affordances. Development in Practice” with Joseph Bock and K. McMahon. He also published a review of the book “The Cultural Dimensions of Peacebuilding in Peace and Change.”
Georgios Stylianides, associate professor of exercise science and director of exercise science & kinesiology, published the translation of the academic textbook, KinAnatomy (3rd ed.).
