October 2024

Dear Juniata Community,

Autumn colors have added to the vibrancy of our campus as we gear up for the second half of an exciting fall semester. We’re still smiling about an unforgettable Homecoming and Family Weekend and looking forward to all the memorable moments to come.

Last weekend, we welcomed our board of trustees to campus for their annual fall meeting. The weekend featured opportunities for the trustees to reconnect, learn campus news, discuss updates, and plan for the future.

International experts visited Juniata early this month to participate in “Toward Environmental Justice: Transition to a Sustainable Future,” a two-day international symposium hosted by The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies. I never fail to be impressed at the level of discourse programming like this elicits from our community.

From global to local, our campus community is committed to cultivating leaders who will make a difference in the world around them. This is evidenced in events like the upcoming 18th annual Empty Bowls, in which more than 400 handmade bowls created by Juniata students, faculty, and friends will be sold on Friday, October 25, to combat food insecurity in Huntingdon County.

Earlier this month, we cheered as our women’s volleyball team shattered the second-longest NCAA volleyball all-time winning streak with an unprecedented 76 consecutive victories.

The fall season is becoming more and more exciting as the men's soccer team has made program history, beating Elizabethtown, Scranton, and Susquehanna in an undefeated season leading to an upcoming home playoff game.

Your support of our students and campus community is invaluable! Thank you for being a part of our incredible journey, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact we can create together.

Warm regards,
President James A. Troha

The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies at Juniata College hosted its third International Symposium, “Toward Environmental Justice: Transition to a Sustainable Future,” which brought expert panelists from around the world to discuss the urgent global challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and the pursuit of a just and sustainable future.

Symposium panelists were Saleem Ali, Blue and Gold distinguished professor of energy and the environment at the University of Delaware; David Begay, associate research professor at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy; Gabriela Cuadrado Quesada, senior lecturer and researcher of water rights and justice at IHE Delft; Julia Marton-Lefèvre, the chair of the board of the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT; Youba Sokona, former vice chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; and Fernando Treviño, special deputy secretary for environmental justice at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The two-day symposium provided a platform for dialogue on rising temperatures, biodiversity loss, deforestation, and other extreme weather events causing widespread disruptions in nature.

This month, we feature the Accounting, Business, and Economics Department, which welcomed more than 100 people to their homecoming social reception.
